Redefine Properties, the second largest SA-based listed property company by assets, has launched Kwena Square, a convenience mall in Little Falls, Roodepoort.

The mall, which was developed at a cost of around R200m, is the first mall to open in SA in more than a year and is a vote of confidence in Johannesburg, Executive Mayor of the city, Mpho Phalatse said at the launch on Wednesday June 29.

“Kwena Square is a very important R210m investment in this community. Now that Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, I want people to realise that our city is open for business. We need more of this. We have inherited a broken city and it will take a long time to fix. The more investment we collect, the quicker we can fix it,” Phalatse said.

The mall will serve residents across Johannesburg’s West Rand and is offering some of the most popular brands among middle income consumers, including the first RocoMamas drive-thru and the first Little West Packers toy and baby store, in Johannesburg.

Redefine’s chief operating officer, Leon Kok said that in addition to the existing Leroy Merlin and Decathlon stores, the centre would house 23 news stores anchored by national retailers including Checkers, Checkers Liquor and Clicks.

The mall also includes local tenants such as Benitas Food emporium, Neo Vision, My Krafts, Cassa Nosa, Quello, Uncle Joe’s Florist, Suggee Bar and Fresh House.

Kok said that Redefine is committed to making its operations as sustainable as possible and Kwena Square includes an array of rooftop solar panels which will generate as much as 40% of the electricity required by the centre.

He said it was very notable that Kwena Square had opened with full occupancy, suggesting that retailers want to trade in the centre for years to come.

“The fact that our centre is so aesthetically pleasing is a major plus factor, together with its strong focus on environmental, social and governance, while offering ease of use, open ventilation and safety. The completion of the project during the pandemic was notable and reflects our commitment and our tenants’ confidence in the project,” said Kok.
