Bronwyn Rodrigues, ZAP HUB CEO
While South Africa’s real estate services and markets ecosystem is advanced and employs sophisticated professionals, it is ripe for disruption.
This has prompted the launch of ZAP HUB, a dedicated property and support services hub available in cyber space, CEO and founder Bronwyn Rodrigues says.
“At ZAP HUB, we are dedicated to making real estate as straightforward, empowering, and accessible as possible. As South Africa’s innovative, all-in-one real estate platform, we cater to property buyers, sellers, and professionals who seek a seamless, transparent experience,” she says.
Rodrigues, a South African who built a career in Canada, returned to South Africa and saw the opportunity to create a business which connects people with property practitioners and numerous service providers. She recognised that while South Africa’s residential property market is manned by numerous talented people, the industry itself needs to be more professional and better regulated.
ZAP HUB was launched to help property practitioners (formerly estate agents) and other service providers to operate more efficiently, she says.
“Our mission is to simplify property transactions, making them smarter, easier, and more rewarding for everyone involved. We enable young people and more diverse people to compete in the market. As long as people are professional and work with the right certifications, then there is more trust around transactions and recourse which protects buyers and sellers,” Rodrigues says.
Rodrigues stresses that only those property practitioners who have valid fidelity fund certificates (FFCs) may register with ZAP HUB. She worked as an agent in Canada where built an impressive career and and at one point was selling up to 60 houses as year.
“Agents are trusted in Canada. As much as 90% of people sell their homes through agents. They are able to work with a very regulated and reliable system. We need this level of excellence in South Africa,” Rodrigues says.
The glaring issues with bad service and a lack of recourse when property practitioners fail to deliver for buyers became obvious for Rodrigues quickly.
Having to move to SA quickly so that her son could seek specialist medical help, she bought a house site unseen, having used an agent to shop for houses via the phone.
Her situation was desperate and the agent lied about numerous issues. They didn’t have the certificates for different things related to the home.
“The home inspector didn’t do a good job whatsoever. It was clear that the house had major issues such as damp which cost R500 000 to fix. Ultimately I spent millions to buy the house and more millions to fix it,” says Rodrigues.
“This house cost me much of my retirement savings which I amassed in Canada. So I started ZAP HUB to help others to avoid bad service in the future,” she says.
“We don’t just have an agent problem. We have an agency problem where so many agencies do not operate with FFCs and are therefore non-compliant,” she says.
It is the job of the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA) to act against non-compliant practitioners.
ZAP HUB is operating so that the residential real estate industry improves markedly in terms of compliance and service.
“So estate agents have been called the most hated profession in SA. We want to change that perception. Only those practitioners who have valid FFCs can register with us. We want to ensure that our customers have access to 32 different categories of services which include professionals,” says Rodrigues.
ZAP HUB is a platform founded on radical transparency, giving buyers, sellers, and agents a fair, honest, and PPRA-aligned space to connect. Properties are more than just buildings. This industry is the heart of a community, Rodrigues explains.
The website’s portal includes valuable tools and information for communities. People can find property practitioners and practitioners can also list their properties on the site. ZAP HUB has numerous properties from South Africa and the United Arab Emirates listed on its database.
ZAP HUB’s service providers listed on the site include Alpha Pro Virtual Tours, Berry King Waterproofing SA, Grabe Londt Attorneys, Mbewu Ya Gwambe Projects, The Goddess Factor Medical Aesthetics and The Longevity Coach.
New service providers will include, property valuers borehole installers, domestic workers, gardeners, builders, building material providers and the like alongside accurate testimonials.
Property Trainers can also been found at ZAP HUB. These include Itakane Training Academy and Care Training and Consulting. Users can also register for ZAP HUB’s training programme which runs for three hours and can be taught in-person or online.
ZAP HUB also offers a compliance audit so practitioner can get piece of mind about their operations.
Then there is FFC assistance. This service is specifically for candidate property practitioners who have already submitted their FFC application to the PPRA, as well as agents going through FFC renewal. If you have not yet applied, please complete your PPRA application first before registering here.
ZAP HUB understands that navigating the FFC process can be challenging, especially when the PPRA provides limited direct assistance. The compamny’s dedicated experts provide hands-on support, helping people to identify missing or incorrect documents, ensuring your paperwork meets all PPRA standards, and guiding them step-by-step until your registration or renewal is successful.
Rodrigues is excited about how ZAP HUB can help many people who work in real estate and related industries.
“ZAP HUB is becoming the preferred business hub for South Africa. Real estate has been zapped if you will with the help of our 100 plus employees and experts. We are far beyond a listings site and are excited to serve our country, the UAE and beyond,” she says.
She says compliance can improve in SA even if the country has a long way to go.
“Some 56 000 practitioners are compliant out of 1.1-million people. We want the industry to know that we are serious about compliance and fair service,” Rodrigues says.
