The South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) and the Johannesburg Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (JCCI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to outline the arrangements for a closer interaction and support between the two entities in the interests
of jointly identifying initiatives that seek to have a positive contribution to the property sector and
business at large.
The partnership was finalised and “will foster a common vision and goal between the private sector and government”, it said.
The partnership will see SAPOA and JCCI work together to resolve various challenges that affect
both business and the property industry relating to the current water infrastructure challenges being
experienced within Gauteng, through jointly lobbying addressing and making representation on
existing and proposed government policies as well as legislation and policy that has a negative impact
on businesses and the property industry, according to SAPOA.
“The ongoing deterioration at municipal levels not only puts strain on the financial viability of property owners and the general business environment, but also create an environment of uncertainty that could drive investment away from South Africa’s real estate market,” said SAPOA CEO Neil Gopal.
Two meetings have been held (one late in 2024 with a follow up in January this year) with the
JCCI, SAPOA, Midrand / Waterfall Developers Forum, Waterfall Management, the Town Plan
inf forum, OUTA and JoburgCan where representatives of BASA and SALGA also attended, together
with the Joburg Chief Operating Officer and her team to discuss:
- The status of various construction projects relating to reservoir / water towers / water lines within
the Midrand /Waterfall area, - How developers and / or the private sector can work together with Joburg Water to assist
with infrastructure upgrades required in the area. - What Joburg Water would require in order to further participation and enter into MoU’s with
interested parties to assist with the water related infrastructure.
The Mayor of Johannesburg requested a meeting with the JCCI in December where he enquired as to the progress of the above working relationship between SAPOA and JCCI.
