JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Transnet has taken the first step towards selling 15 of its properties, including Johannesburg’s forgotten Carlton Centre, according to a government gazette.

The state-owned logistics company has identified a range of assets for potential disposal, including shopping centres, golf courses and offices.

The Carlton Centre is a 50-storey mostly office development in Johannesburg’s inner city, and is among the most prized assets on the list.

The move comes as the parastatal has been under pressure to improve its financial position and focus on its core business.

The sale of the properties is part of Transnet’s broader effort to unlock value from assets that are not central to its rail, port and pipeline operations.

Transnet has previously considered selling the Carlton Centre, but this latest process signals a new step towards a possible disposal.

The company has not yet sold the properties; however, it has initiated the process that could eventually lead to their sale. No asking prices have been revealed yet.
