SOUTH AFRICA
Welcome to the latest episode of the South African real estate podcast, Another Brick in the Wall.
In this episode, Michael speaks to Amelia Beattie, the former CEO of Liberty Two Degrees, who is now the Head of Business Efficiencies, Property and Sustainable Impact for Standard Bank Insurance and Asset Management. She explains how corporate parks can contribute to environmental sustainability goals and wellbeing in urban areas.
According to statista.com, South Africa is among the top 15 largest emitters of carbon dioxide
worldwide, largely because of its heavy reliance on coal for electricity generation and its high per capita
emission rate. The department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment plays a role in
ensuring that the country is equipped to manage and mitigate the effects of climate change.
One such way is the establishment of parks as a significant contributor to environmental
sustainability. South Africa is recognised as one of the richest nations in the world in terms of its
biological heritage. The priority, over the past ten years has been to safeguard the country’s natural
resources, which parks are an important part of.
Liberty, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Standard Bank Group, revamped its headquarters in the thick of Covid 19, in anticipation of employees returning to the office. The refurbishment included the Indwe Park, which was an underutilised parking lot.
An inter-disciplinary team of experts including James Delaney and Batley and Partners was responsible for the park’s design, led by Liberty Two Degrees, the property portfolio arm of the group. Indwe Park lies directly opposite Wits University and encompasses the precinct of Liberty’s headquarters.
