WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
The multibillion-rand Cape Winelands Airport project is on-track in South Africa. The R8bn project will see the construction of an airport which is scheduled to open in 2028.
The airport will be developed by the Cape Winelands Airport entity with support from JSE_listed Growthpoint Properties as a “key property and asset partner”. Construction stalwart WBHO will handle the actual building, while Growthpoint will manage the commercial and hospitality aspects, aiming for operations by 2028. Growthpoint is Africa’s largest listed landlord. Growthpoint has secured the rights to co-invest in and develop the 450-hectare precinct alongside privately owned airport operator RSA Aero.
The airport will be constructed on the site of the Fisantekraal Airfield, which was established in 1943 as a Lockheed Ventura bomber base for the South African Air Force. It is located 13km north east of the growing town of Durbanville. Fisantekraal Airfield serves as a general aviation facility and flight training base.
