Australia’s picturesque landscapes and vibrant cities often mask hidden dangers. Understanding which regions pose the most significant risks is crucial for anyone planning to live, work, or travel in Australia.

Using crime rates, mortality statistics, and the frequency of natural disasters, the team at Affordable Urns has given each Australian region a ‘danger score’, ranking them from most to least dangerous. Here they reveal which regions are the top ten most (and least) dangerous in Australia.

Why Are These Regions So Dangerous?

Inner Perth is crowned the most dangerous region in Australia, mainly due to its very high crime rate. Anecdotal evidence from residents suggests this might be due to the business area of Inner Perth having little residential housing, meaning it becomes a hotspot for crime after workers have left for the evening. Inner Perth also houses the city’s most lively nightlife streets, areas which also attract high levels of crime. A similar effect might be happening in Central Adelaide, which scores second on this list and also has a high crime rate.

The four areas in Western Australia are also the only regions on this table to score on the natural disaster rate column, contributing to their high position. This is likely due to the marked increase in the region’s number and intensity of bushfires.

“It’s interesting to note that seven of the ten mentioned areas are part of Australia’s largest cities, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Townsville and Bunbury are also fairly large. This link between large population and crime isn’t particularly surprising and has been noted by statistics many times before.

“The Far West and Orana region arguably stands out here, as it is largely remote and without big cities. This region likely makes the top ten because of its high death rate, which could be explained by its remoteness, meaning residents lack access to healthcare resources and find it harder to get timely medical assistance,” says a spokesperson for Affordable Urns’.

What Makes These Regions The Least Dangerous?

The Australian Capital Territory, the land around and including Canberra, Australia’s capital, tops the table. Given the high level of security surrounding government operations and the protection given to officials, this low crime rate is perhaps unsurprising.

What is interesting is that these results include some of the larger cities in Australia, including three different areas of Sydney. In contrast to the other major cities in the top 10 most dangerous, Sydney’s crime rate is significantly lower. This could be because Sydney is the largest city in Australia, so it gets significant amounts of funding to address crime. Also, other Australian cities, especially Perth, have been growing much faster than Sydney in recent years, perhaps meaning that their crime prevention methods are struggling in the face of larger populations.
