As a step forward to contributing to the achievement of a Net Zero Carbon 2030 target, super-regional shopping Sandton City has implemented various initiatives to enhance energy efficiency, including the installation of a 1MW solar photovoltaic roof structure, as well as smart-metering systems to gain insights into energy consumption patterns.
The owners of Sandton City, being Liberty Group Limited (Liberty) and Pareto Limited (Pareto) are therefore excited to announce their interest in procuring renewable energy over the Independent Energy Pool (IEP) platform, an efficient and cost-effective business-to-business energy pool allowing electricity consumers, generators and electricity traders to buy and sell electricity, for the development and deployment of innovative, wheeled renewable energy solutions for Sandton City. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Sandton City’s commitment to sustainable electricity procurement.
A target has been set for achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 (Scope 1 & 2) at Sandton City. Group CEO, Malose Kekana at Pareto said: “As part of the process in achieving this goal and lowering the related costs of electricity consumption, jointly as owners, we would like to invite interested generators and electricity traders to register, without cost, on the IEP platform and to attend one of their Generator Information Sharing Sessions prior to the release of the RFP documentation to the market.”
Josè Snyders, Chief Commercial Officer at Liberty Two Degrees said: “As managers of Sandton City, which has always been an environmental leader and has set the standard in retail innovation, we are purposeful in our endeavours to manage and diminish Sandton City’s carbon footprint. We aim to achieve energy efficiencies and other opportunities through further initiatives, which include wheeling. We will persist in ensuring that the mall continues to operate responsibly, considering the environment and the needs of all our stakeholders.”
The IEP will host an information sharing session for generators, which will introduce generators and electricity traders to the procurement processes on IEP’s platform on www.independentenergypool.com . Generators and electricity traders will be able to register on this platform for the next information sharing session. The IEP ecosystem allows for the transacting of electricity in a balanced, secure and standardised environment. The ecosystem incorporates the ability to trade Renewable Energy Certificates, as well as tracking and reporting ESG criteria.
“The long-term sustainability of Sandton City hinges on environmental protection. Our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship aims to minimise our impact on the environment and address climate change,” said Snyders.
