In this episode, Michael and Alistair chat to Jayson-Lee Collins who is leading the sales process of Ponte Tower for Broll Auctions and Nickolaus Bauer, a journalist and the founder of the NGO Dlala Nje.
Ponte City which is Africa’s first cylindrical skyscraper, a focal point of Johannesburg’s skyline for the past 50 years is being sold by private tender.
The 173m tower was the continent’s tallest residential apartment building for 48 years and has a storied history from its days as an address for the wealthy. The distinctive design of architects Mannie Feldman, Manfred Hermer and Rodney Grosskopff has made it one of South Africa’s most recognisable and photographed buildings.
It has been through numerous transformations. Initially it was built as the premium living space in the inner city. But in 2002 it was declared a slum before it was later rejuvenated. Whoever buys it next will need to keep its spirit in tact and to help to serve the communities living in and around it.
